Overview

 

The Principal Design Lead will direct all design/engineering planning and execution for all ground-up and lease upfit construction projects for Chick-fil-A Supply & Food Processing Facilities.  Serving in a key management role, the Principal Design Lead will oversee & manage the development of all market specific conceptual designs, site selection test-fits, key consultant due diligence coordination, fully engineered plans & specifications, entitlements/permitting approvals, and construction progress assessments for all Supply Chain facilities.  This is a significant and challenging role that will support and foster Chick-fil-A’s Supply Chain innovation strategy and long-term expansion goals.

The Principal Design Lead will report directly to the Sr. Principal Program Lead of Facilities & Projects and will collaborate with various senior stakeholders to drive Supply Chain network delivery.  This position is located at the Chick-fil-A Inc. Support Center in Atlanta, GA.

Responsibilities

Program Related:

  • Understand and ensure adherence to governing license and organizational standards to include USDA, FDA, OSHA, federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Conduct routine evaluation & upkeep of master design standards & specifications to ensure full integration of expanding operational requirements, lessons learned derived from each completed project & approved new technologies, building systems & automated solutions driving continuous improvement of CFA’s DC facility performance & competitive advantage
  • Participate in the interview & qualification of prospective A/E/C professional services providers

Pre-Construction Related:

  • Collaborate with CFA Real Estate team, Sr. Principal Lead, and external partners in the coordination of pre-development planning activities to include programming exercise with NST, Operations & AEI Teams, development of initial market-specific design concepts, preparation of lease work letters/design exhibits, preparation of zoning verification letters, entitlements approvals, and due diligence surveys
  • Serve as a liaison between CFA, design professional services partners and legal counsel in the negotiations & execution of professional services agreements for design
  • Support Sr. Project Leads in the preparation & administering or RFP’s, developing key design exhibits, design timelines, receiving & recording responses to RFIs, evaluation of proposed design alternates & formulation of award recommendations
  • Lead architects, engineers, and other key design consults in the development of schematic designs & formulation of site-specific test-fits, ensuring all projects are designed and delivered within CFA’s established quality & operation standards
  • Lead coordination & engagement of design/design-build partners and CFA support services teams through 30/60/90% progress reviews, securing necessary operations team input, vetting design decisions with key stakeholders and integration of approved design elements with final plans & specifications
  • Coordinate integration of all FF&E requirements

Construction Related:

  • Participate in all construction milestone progress walks to ensure field execution complies with approved construction issue drawings & specifications; coordinate preparation of field reports with A/E partners detailing observed correction items & coordinate resolution with Sr. Project Leads
  • In partnership with Sr. Project Leads, coordinate & conduct all final punch walks with design, construction & FF&E partners; prepare & aggregate master punch correction list, support the tracking, execution & acceptance of all completed work
  • Oversee food production/processing equipment FAT, testing, commissioning & SAT processes; support AEI team in other operational asset commissioning processes & evaluations as required
  • Lead the development, procurement, review & sign-off of all as-built record files; register approved documents in CFA’s central repository

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Civil Engineering
  • Demonstrate functional knowledge and expertise in design management policies, procedures, and practices; proven track record of managing multi-disciplined A/E teams
  • Experience managing FF&E program development, integration & execution
  • Demonstrate an excellent understanding of model building codes adopted by United States jurisdictions
  • Demonstrate business acumen and ownership of distribution center KPIs, using data & understanding of emerging technologies to drive continuous improvement
  • Ability to lead through change management
  • Ability to travel at least 40% of the time, as needed, which includes overnight travel
  • Minimum Relevant Experience: 10+ years of Architectural design experience within supply-chain sector, delivering warehouse/distribution center facilities
  • Detailed understanding of architectural design & geotechnical, civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, refrigeration & processes engineering disciplines

Preferred Qualifications

  •  Master’s degree in Business, Land Development, Construction Management, Architecture, Civil or Industrial Engineering
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Bluebeam, Adobe Pro, CAD, REVIT & BIM 360 programs
  • Demonstrate expertise in value engineering and zoning/code/financial/entitlement feasibility studies
  • Preferred Relevant Experience: 15+ years of design management for large-scale projects, food service/processing & cold-storage distribution center facilities
  • Architect or Professional Engineer certifications and/or licensure
  • Virtual Design & Construction (VDC)
